What Does Society Lose When the Bond Between Children and Parents Breaks?

In a nursing home, an elderly woman sat near the door every day at five o’clock. The nurse asked: “Are you waiting for someone?” She replied with a faint smile: “My son will come… he promised.” Weeks passed… and he did not come. This is not rare. It is a global phenomenon.

🔹 Why Does Islam Give Parents Extraordinary Status? Because the human being is not an isolated individual. He is part of a chain: A past that sacrificed for him A present built upon it A future awaiting his contribution The Qur’an captures old age with a heart-piercing image: “Do not even say ‘uff’ to them.

” As though God says: Be careful… even a sigh of annoyance is recorded.

🔹 When the Bond Is Preserved… Society Flourishes When elders are respected, children learn, and mercy flows between them: Crime decreases Loneliness decreases Moral heritage is transmitted Families strengthen Social stability increases Sociological research confirms that societies that honor their elders are more cohesive.

🔹 Mercy… Not Law Laws may force a child to visit his parent… But they cannot force him to love. Islam does not seek a legal relationship… but a merciful one. The son should see in his father his roots, and in his mother the foundation of his tenderness — not merely elderly individuals.

🔹 A Question That May Change Your Heart Imagine yourself forty years from now: Your hair white. Your steps slow. Your voice weak. How would you want your children to treat you? The answer that emerges from your heart… is the same answer Islam asks you to plant today in your relationship with your parents.
