A Light Upon Light
In every culture of the world, and since the earliest civilizations, human beings have lifted their eyes to the sky and asked one question: Is there someone who hears me? The question was not always philosophical. Sometimes it was born from a moment of pain… or fear… or the loss of a loved one… or a feeling of loneliness in a noisy world.
What is remarkable is that this question did not appear in only one civilization, but in nearly all civilizations. India, China, ancient Egypt, the civilizations of South America… all recognized the idea of God, or a higher power, or a Creator.
So why does this belief repeat itself in every place and time?
Faith… A Universal Human Phenomenon Anthropological studies confirm that belief in a higher power is almost a shared trait among all human societies. The Encyclopaedia Britannica indicates that the idea of God or a higher power was present in nearly all civilizations, even the most primitive ones.
Humans fear illness… poverty… and old age… Yet global doctrines about a “god of poverty” or a “god of illness” did not emerge with the same force as the idea of the one Creator God.
