Could Muhammad (PBUH) Have Fabricated the Message?

Sometimes it is simply said: "Maybe he wasn't a prophet... maybe he invented the story." The idea seems easy. But when we put it under the microscope, it begins to crack. Let’s assume — just to verify — that Muhammad ﷺ fabricated the message himself. What would follow from this assumption?

First: What Is the Motivation? Every great lie needs a great reason. Wealth? He was offered wealth and refused. Power? He was offered kingship and refused. Fame? Fame is not sought through siege, hunger, and threats. Instead, he lived for many years under intense psychological and social pressure. So what gain justifies this price?

Second: Why Continue the Lie? A person might lie once. And exaggerate sometimes. But to live for twenty-three years, holding onto one story, in private and public, in strength and weakness, without retracting or contradicting himself… This is not the behavior of an ordinary liar. Lies require comfort. A moment of confession. A retreat.

02

But it was never known that he said: "I was joking." Or "I’ve changed my mind." He died while affirming the same message.

03

Third: Why Include Criticism of Himself? If he were fabricating the Qur’an, why would it contain verses that admonish him? Why would the text sometimes correct actual positions he had taken? A person who fabricates a story about himself tends to beautify his image. Not include a text that publicly criticizes him.

Fourth: Why Risk Everything? Lying might bring short-term gains. But Muhammad ﷺ risked: His relationships, His safety, The lives of his followers, The lives of his family. Is it conceivable that a person would risk all of that for a story he knows deep down is false?

Fifth: Consistency Between Words and Actions A liar often shows a contradiction between what he says and how he lives. But the biography of Muhammad ﷺ was consistent with his call: He called for truth and was truthful. He called for honesty and was honest. He called for asceticism and was not luxurious.

He called for justice and was not a tyrant. It is hard to build an entire life on a lie without the truth leaking through in moments of weakness.

A Clear Comparison We have two possibilities: The first: A man invented a message, held onto it for more than twenty years, endured pain for it, rejected worldly gains, and continued until his death without confession.

The second: A truthful man, who believed he was a messenger, delivered what he was commanded, and bore the consequences of that. Which of the two possibilities is less complex? Which one explains the events without additional assumptions?

Saying that Muhammad ﷺ fabricated the message

seems like a quick solution… But when the details of his life are examined, this solution becomes less convincing. And the honest question remains: If he was not lying, and he was not deluded, and he was not seeking personal gain… What is the most plausible explanation?

At this point, the answer he repeatedly gave throughout his life deserves to be taken seriously: He did not fabricate it… He delivered it.
