Psychological Stress: Its Impact on a Person and How to Deal with It

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

Dear brothers and sisters in faith, in the era we live in today, psychological stress has become one of the most prominent challenges people face. Talking about it has turned into a daily topic across societies.

01

From the pressures of everyday life, to work demands, and through social and economic difficulties—many factors increase psychological stress. Hardly a day passes without many people feeling its weight on their hearts and minds, which leads to anxiety, tension, and sometimes depression.

02

Stress may begin as something mild, but if it accumulates and is not handled properly, it can turn into major problems that affect our daily lives, our relationships with others, and our ability to perform our duties well.

03

Therefore, it is very important that we learn how to deal with these pressures, and understand their causes and the right ways to handle them according to what our upright religion has taught us.

Dear beloved, when we look at the causes of psychological stress, we find that they vary from one person to another, yet there are common causes, including:

- Social pressures: such as family problems, pressures in social relationships, and a lack of understanding with people around someone.

- Economic pressures: related to financial challenges and problems a person faces due to inability to meet needs or withstand economic crises.

- Professional pressures: what a person faces in the workplace, whether because of workload, lack of appreciation, or limited opportunities for promotion.

- Health pressures: when someone suffers from physical or psychological illnesses that strongly affect their mental state.

- Expectations and self-imposed pressures: when someone sets extremely high standards for themselves, or expects perfection in all areas of life, leading to constant exhaustion and tension.

As for the effects, psychological stress impacts a person in several areas, including:

- Psychological effects: such as continuous anxiety, tension, depression, a sense of emptiness, or an inability to focus. - Physical effects: such as increased heart rate, insomnia, headaches, and muscle pain. - Social effects: stress can lead to deterioration of relationships with family and friends, and may lead to isolation or withdrawal.

Dear beloved, our noble religion has guided us to deal with psychological stress in wise ways. Islam did not leave us to face these pressures without direction; the Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah contain many texts that help us confront stress:

Reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul): One of the greatest means of easing psychological stress. When a believer realizes that they have no ower except through Allah, and that they can face challenges by Allah’s care, the burden becomes lighter.

Allah Almighty says:

“And whoever relies upon Allah—then He is sufficient for him.”

(At-Talāq 65:3).

Prayer and supplication (Du‘ā’): Prayer is among the greatest acts of worship that reduce tension and stress. In an authentic hadith, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Give us comfort through it, O Bilal.”

Meaning: prayer was a comfort for the Prophet ﷺ and a means to calm the soul and relieve worries.

Patience (Ṣabr): Islam strongly encourages patience.

Allah Almighty says: “O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”

(Al-Baqarah 2:153).

Patience in facing pressures helps psychological stability and strengthens endurance.

Contentment with Allah’s decree (Riḍā): Believing that everything happens by Allah’s decree helps us accept hardships and psychological pressures better. Contentment strengthens the heart and grants serenity.

Seeking forgiveness and remembrance of Allah (Istighfār & Dhikr): Dhikr and istighfār are among the greatest means of inner comfort; they fill hearts with tranquility and reduce worries.

Allah Almighty says: “Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

(Ar-Ra‘d 13:28).

O Muslims, psychological stress certainly increases in our lives due to the many challenges we face. But we must always remember that Allah is with the believers in times of hardship, and He does not waste the reward of those who are patient and seek His reward.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“How amazing is the affair of the believer! All of his affairs are good. If something good happens to him, he is grateful and that is good for him; and if something harmful happens to him, he is patient and that is good for him.”

(Narrated by Muslim).

So let us seek Allah’s help, and remember that nothing happens in our lives except by Allah’s decree and wisdom. Even in times of hardship and stress, Allah tests us to examine our patience, to make us stronger, and to bring us closer to Him.

Dear beloved, let us deal well with psychological pressures by relying on Allah, calling upon Him, and following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ in turning to prayer and supplication. Let us remember that what we go through is a test from Allah, and that after difficulty comes ease.

We ask Allah Almighty to lighten the pressures of life upon us, to grant serenity and tranquility to our hearts, and to help us remain patient and steadfast in all times of hardship. Āmīn.
