Why Can’t a Human Live Without Revelation?
It has become common for someone to say with confidence: “I believe in the existence of a Creator… but I do not need a message. My mind is enough.” At first glance, the idea seems logical. God created the universe with astonishing precision. And the human being was given a mind capable of thinking. So why do we need revelation?
Is it not enough to think… and choose? But when we look a little deeper, a gap appears that the mind alone cannot fill.
First: Knowing That God Exists… Does Not Mean Knowing What He Wants The mind can guide us to the existence of a Creator. An organized universe does not explain itself. The immense precision in the laws of nature does not arise from nothing. But knowing that God exists does not answer the most important questions: Why was I created?
What is the purpose of my life? What does this Creator want from me? What will I be held accountable for? How do I deal with pain? with death? with injustice? Belief in the existence of a Creator is the beginning… but it does not give you a roadmap. A human does not only search for “Who created me,” but for “What does He want from me.
” And here begins the need for revelation.
“Revelation says clearly: Life is not meaningless. Pain is not without purpose. Injustice will not be lost. There is accountability. There is complete justice. These are not merely psychologically comforting phrases, but an essential part of the concept of the message itself.
A Simple Comparison We have two possibilities: The first: God created the human, gave him a mind, then left him to differ endlessly, then holds him accountable. The second: God created the human, gave him a mind, then sent messengers to clarify the purpose and the path. Which of the two aligns more with wisdom? with justice? with mercy?
The second possibility appears more consistent with the concept of a perfect God. From here, prophethood becomes not merely a religious belief, but a rational and moral necessity.
If Prophethood Is Necessary… Then Who Is the Prophet? If we are convinced that revelation is necessary, then the next question becomes very logical: Did there appear in history a man who claimed to be a messenger from God, and possessed signs of truthfulness? And whose message was consistent with reason, human nature, and reality?
Here begins the examination of the life of Muhammad ﷺ. Not merely as a religious leader, but as a human who said he carries a message from God to all humanity. If the human cannot live without revelation, then the real question is no longer: Do we need a message? Rather, it becomes: Is this the message?
And this is what we will explore in the coming articles.
