Psychological Stress, Its Impact on the Human Being, and How to Deal with It

Islam has not left us to face these pressures without guidance. In the Qur’an and the Sunnah, there are many texts that help us confront psychological stress.

Dear beloved brothers and sisters in Allah, in the age we live in today, psychological stress has become one of the most prominent challenges faced by human beings. Talking about it has become part of daily life in different societies.

01

From the pressures of everyday living, to work-related challenges, and through social and economic difficulties—all of these factors contribute to increased psychological stress. Hardly a day passes without many people feeling the weight of these pressures on their hearts and minds, leading to anxiety, tension, and sometimes depression.

02

At first, psychological stress may be mild. However, if it accumulates and is not dealt with properly, it can turn into serious problems that affect our daily lives, our relationships with others, and our ability to perform our duties well.

03

Therefore, it is extremely important that we learn how to deal with these pressures, understand their causes, and know the correct ways to manage them according to what our upright religion has taught us.

Dear beloved, when we look at the causes of psychological stress, we find that they are many and vary from one person to another. However, there are some common causes, including:

1- Social pressures: such as family problems, pressures in social relationships, and lack of understanding with people in one’s surroundings.

2- Economic pressures: related to financial challenges and difficulties resulting from the inability to meet one’s needs or face economic crises.

3- Professional pressures: those encountered in the workplace, whether due to work overload, lack of appreciation, or limited opportunities for promotion.

4- Health-related pressures: when a person suffers from physical or psychological illnesses that greatly affect their mental state.

5- Self-imposed expectations and pressures: when a person sets extremely high standards for themselves or expects perfection in all aspects of life, leading to constant exhaustion and tension. As for the effects, psychological stress impacts a person in several ways, including:

Psychological effects: such as persistent anxiety, tension, depression, a feeling of emptiness, or difficulty concentrating.

Physical effects: such as increased heart rate, insomnia, headaches, and muscle pain.

Social effects: where psychological stress leads to the deterioration of relationships with family and friends, and may result in isolation or withdrawal.

Dealing with Psychological Stress in Islam

Dear beloved, our upright religion has guided us to wise ways of dealing with psychological stress. Islam did not leave us to face these pressures without direction. In the Qur’an and the Sunnah, there are many teachings that help us confront psychological stress:

Reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul): Reliance upon Allah is one of the greatest means of reducing psychological stress. When a believer feels that there is no power except through Allah, and that they are able to face challenges through Allah’s care and support, the burden of stress becomes lighter. Allah the Exalted says:

“And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him.”

(Qur’an 65:3)

Prayer and supplication: Prayer is one of the greatest acts of worship that can help relieve tension and stress. In the noble hadith, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Give us comfort through it, O Bilal,” meaning that prayer was a source of comfort for the Prophet ﷺ and a means of calming the soul and easing worries.

Patience (Sabr): Patience is a value that Islam strongly emphasizes. Allah the Exalted says:

“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”

(Qur’an 2:153) Patience in facing stress helps maintain psychological stability and strengthens one’s ability to endure.

Contentment with divine decree (Qada’ and Qadar): Belief that everything that happens in our lives is by Allah’s decree helps us accept hardships and psychological pressures in a better way. Contentment strengthens the heart and grants tranquility.

Seeking forgiveness and remembrance of Allah (Istighfar and Dhikr): Remembrance and seeking forgiveness are among the most important means of psychological comfort. They fill our hearts with peace and relieve our worries. Allah the Exalted says:

“Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.”

(Qur’an 13:28)

Dear Muslims, there is no doubt that psychological stress increases in our lives due to the many challenges we face. However, we must always remember that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, is with the believers during hardships, and that He never allows the reward of those who are patient and seek His reward to be lost.

“How amazing is the affair of the believer! Indeed, all of his affairs are good. If something pleasing happens to him, he is grateful and that is good for him; and if something harmful happens to him, he is patient and that is good for him.”

(Narrated by Muslim)

So let us seek help from Allah the Exalted and remember that nothing happens in our lives except by His decree and wisdom. Even in times of hardship and pressure, Allah tests us to examine our patience and to make us stronger and closer to Him.

Dear beloved, let us deal wisely with psychological stress by relying upon Allah, supplicating to Him, and following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ by turning to prayer and supplication. Let us always remember that the challenges we face are merely a test from Allah, and that after hardship comes ease.

We ask Allah the Exalted to relieve us of the pressures of life, grant tranquility and peace to our hearts, and help us remain patient and steadfast in all times of difficulty. O Allah, Ameen.

I say these words of mine, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you; so seek His forgiveness—indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
