The Nature of Salvation: Relationship with God or Extinction?
Islamic salvation differs fundamentally from the concept of salvation in Nirvana. In Islam, salvation is not merely a negative escape from suffering nor simply liberation from worldly pain. Rather, it is a great positive transition into divine pleasure and everlasting bliss.
Allah says:
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],And enter among My [righteous] servants,And enter My Paradise."﴾ (Al-Fajr 27–30)
Salvation in Islam is the result of a relationship of love, hope, and submission between the Creator and the creation, culminating in the vision of Allah in Paradise.
In contrast, Nirvana presents a form of salvation as a state of extinction, in which there is neither lover nor beloved, neither worshipper nor object of worship.
Furthermore, Islam affirms that no matter how righteous a person becomes, he is in need of Allah’s mercy and grace to enter Paradise, as authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ:
““No one’s deeds alone will admit him into Paradise.” They said: “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Not even me, unless Allah covers me with His favor and mercy.”
